The United States conducted airstrikes targeting over 75 ISIS sites in central Syria, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed. The strikes, involving B-52s, F-15s, and A-10s, aimed to disrupt and degrade ISIS capabilities, preventing the group from reconstituting in the region following recent upheavals.

The operation comes after the Syrian government fell on Sunday, with rebels toppling President Bashar Assad’s 50-year rule. Assad and his family fled to Russia, where they were granted asylum. Citizens celebrated the momentous turn in the civil war.

CENTCOM Commander Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla emphasized the U.S.’s commitment to defeating ISIS, warning that any groups supporting the terrorist organization would face accountability. President Biden reaffirmed the U.S. mission, calling Assad’s fall a “fundamental act of justice” while acknowledging the risks and uncertainties ahead.
