President Trump will not oppose Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s new plan to fully occupy the Gaza Strip, U.S. and Israeli officials told Axios. The Israeli Security Cabinet is expected to approve the expanded military operation Thursday. The offensive would push into central Gaza, including Gaza City, and could displace roughly 1 million Palestinians.
Trump said the decision is “pretty much up to Israel.” A U.S. official told Axios the president was moved by a Hamas video showing an Israeli hostage digging his own grave. While the administration opposes annexation, it will not intervene in Israel’s military decisions.
Israeli generals have expressed concern over the risks to hostages and warned of the consequences of taking responsibility for 2 million Palestinians. According to Israeli media, IDF Chief of Staff Gen. Eyal Zamir told Netanyahu, “You are walking into a trap.” Netanyahu reportedly dismissed the warning.
The Trump administration plans to increase U.S. humanitarian aid via the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, with Ambassador Mike Huckabee confirming the expansion of aid centers from four to sixteen. Aid groups say existing humanitarian channels have been shut down and are urging the U.S. to restore traditional aid routes.
