President Donald Trump delivered remarks Sunday at a memorial for slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk, praising his openness to debate while weaving in familiar political attacks.

Speaking at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., Trump said Kirk “did not hate his opponents, he wanted the best for them,” before adding, “That’s where I disagreed with Charlie. I hate my opponents.” He also said Kirk’s message would live on despite his assassination earlier this month at Utah Valley University.

Trump tied Kirk’s legacy to his own movement, noting Kirk’s role in uniting his campaign with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on health issues. He previewed an announcement on autism policy and promised a crackdown on crime in Chicago, Kirk’s hometown area.

The president again claimed Democrats “cheated” in 2020, criticized Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, and took swipes at late-night host Jimmy Kimmel. Trump also called for the death penalty for Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old charged in Kirk’s killing.

“The gun was pointed at him but the bullet was aimed at all of us,” Trump said. He concluded by inviting Kirk’s widow, Erika, on stage for an embrace.
