During a Thursday interview on WABC’s “Cats & Cosby Show,” former President Donald Trump called for special counsel Jack Smith to be “thrown out of the country,” describing Smith as “mentally deranged.” Trump, the GOP’s 2024 presidential candidate, also repeated his vow to fire Smith if elected, calling him “a crooked person” and asserting, “I would fire him within two seconds.”
Smith, appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland in 2022, has led investigations resulting in charges against Trump over his handling of classified documents and alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Although the classified documents case was dismissed earlier this year by Judge Aileen Cannon, Trump’s legal team continues to challenge Smith’s role, recently filing a motion with U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan to dismiss the election subversion case, arguing that Smith’s appointment was unconstitutional.
