Washington, D.C. — President Donald Trump said Tuesday that Americans’ financial situations are not a factor in his negotiations with Iran, arguing that preventing Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon remains his only priority.
Speaking to reporters, Trump was asked how much Americans’ rising costs and economic concerns motivate him in talks with Iran. “Not even a little bit,” Trump responded. “The only thing that matters when I’m talking about Iran, they can’t have a nuclear weapon.”
“I don’t think about Americans’ financial situations. I don’t think about anybody. I think about one thing: We cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon,” he added.
The comments come as the ongoing conflict involving Iran continues affecting energy markets and consumer prices. AAA reported the national average gas price has climbed to about $4.50 per gallon, while Labor Department data released Tuesday showed inflation rising 3.8% over the past year.
Trump has argued gas prices could fall sharply if a deal with Iran is reached and recently floated eliminating the federal gas tax as a temporary relief measure.
At the same time, negotiations between Washington and Tehran appear stalled. Trump said Monday that the ceasefire is on “massive life support” after rejecting Iran’s latest counterproposal in nuclear talks.
Recent CNN polling showed many Americans believe both the war and Trump’s policies are negatively affecting household finances.
