President Donald Trump announced Friday that he had restored $187 million in law enforcement and counterterrorism funding to New York, reversing deep cuts his administration had made to the state’s Homeland Security budget.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) initially slashed more than $189 million from New York’s funding, a move Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) and other officials blasted as “politically motivated.” The cuts represented more than 80% of the state’s usual federal homeland security allocation.

In a Truth Social post, Trump said, “I am pleased to advise that I reversed the cuts made to Homeland Security and Counterterrorism for New York City and State. It was my Honor to do so.” DHS later said FEMA awarded additional money after consulting with federal partners “to ensure [New York] has the resources needed to counter and combat evolving threats.”

Hochul welcomed the reversal, calling it “a major win” that ensures New York police and firefighters have the resources to keep families safe. Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) echoed that message, saying terrorism remains the state’s top threat.

The reversal comes as the administration continues other funding freezes targeting New York, including halting $18 billion in infrastructure projects and $8 billion in green-energy funding.
