SAN FRANCISCO, California — A California attorney tied to efforts to challenge the 2020 presidential election results has been disbarred by the state’s highest court.

The California Supreme Court ordered John Eastman’s law license revoked, removing him from the state’s roll of attorneys following a yearslong disciplinary process. The decision stems from his role in developing a legal strategy that sought to have then-Vice President Mike Pence intervene in the certification of President Joe Biden’s victory.

State bar officials argued that Eastman promoted false claims about the election to courts and public officials. George Cardona, chief trial counsel for the State Bar of California, said the ruling reflects findings that Eastman’s conduct violated professional standards required of attorneys.

Eastman has maintained he was offering legal advice protected under the Constitution. His attorney said the ruling raises First Amendment concerns and indicated plans to appeal the decision to the U.S. Supreme Court.

A State Bar Court judge had previously recommended disbarment in 2024, citing misconduct related to election claims. The California Supreme Court’s decision finalizes that recommendation.

The case represents one of the most significant professional penalties tied to legal efforts surrounding the 2020 election.
