Phoenix, Arizona — A candidate for Arizona governor is drawing attention after shifting from Republican activism, including selling MAGA merchandise, to running under the Arizona Green Party banner.
Risa Lombardo, who filed to run as a Green Party candidate in 2025, was previously a Republican precinct committeeman and supported several far-right campaigns. Records show she promoted merchandise such as “Trump Won” and “Kari Won” items before switching party affiliation.
The Arizona Green Party has publicly distanced itself from Lombardo, stating it does not recognize her candidacy and describing it as an attempt to “hijack” its ballot line. Party officials have warned voters they have no affiliation with her campaign.
Lombardo maintains her campaign is legitimate, saying she identifies with Green Party priorities such as environmental protection, election transparency, and social policy reforms. However, critics point to her recent Republican ties and campaign activity as evidence of inconsistency.
Election dynamics in Arizona make third-party candidates potentially influential, especially among unaffiliated voters, who make up a significant portion of the electorate. Past cases have raised concerns about candidates using third-party labels to influence close races.
Lombardo also faces legal and procedural challenges regarding ballot access, including disputes over the validity of petition signatures submitted for her candidacy.
