ANNANDALE, Virginia — Former Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax fatally shot his wife before taking his own life in their home, according to police, in what authorities describe as a domestic incident tied to ongoing divorce proceedings.
Fairfax County Police said the shooting occurred just after midnight, with the couple’s teenage children inside the home at the time. Police Chief Kevin Davis stated that Fairfax killed his wife, Cerina Fairfax, in the basement before going upstairs and shooting himself. One of the couple’s sons called 911 following the incident.
Authorities said the couple had been living separately within the same home during what was described as a “complicated” divorce. Fairfax had recently been served court documents related to the proceedings, which investigators believe may have contributed to the situation.
Police are continuing to investigate and have obtained a warrant to recover evidence, including the firearm used.
Fairfax, 47, served as lieutenant governor from 2018 to 2022. He was previously considered a rising political figure but faced controversy in 2019 when he denied sexual assault allegations made by two women.
Victim services are assisting the couple’s children as the investigation continues.
