Two statues depicting President Donald Trump and the late financier Jeffrey Epstein appeared Tuesday on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., sparking new controversy over Trump’s past ties to Epstein.
A plaque between the statues read, “In Honor of Friendship Month,” and described Epstein as Trump’s “closest friend.” Additional plaques included excerpts from a birthday message Trump reportedly wrote to Epstein more than 20 years ago, which Democrats on the House Oversight Committee recently released after receiving documents from Epstein’s estate.
The display comes amid ongoing scrutiny of the administration’s handling of Epstein-related records. Earlier this week, The Wall Street Journal urged a judge to dismiss Trump’s lawsuit over its Epstein coverage, calling the case “an affront to the First Amendment.” The paper argued its reporting was later confirmed by documents turned over to Congress.
White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson dismissed the statues as a partisan stunt, saying Trump “kicked Epstein out of his club for being a creep.” She added that Democrats and the media “knew about Epstein and his victims for years and did nothing.”
