WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump defended a controversial statement about Iran on Sunday, saying his warning that “a whole civilization” could die helped bring Iranian leaders to the negotiating table.

Speaking on Fox News, Trump said he stood by the message posted earlier in the week on Truth Social, adding, “I’m fine with it,” when asked about the remarks. The statement came shortly before a U.S.-imposed deadline tied to reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

The administration ultimately agreed to a temporary ceasefire with Iran later that day, though subsequent talks in Pakistan failed to produce a longer-term agreement.

Trump argued the rhetoric was necessary to pressure Iran, referencing longstanding anti-American slogans from Iranian leadership. He suggested the threat targeted military capabilities rather than civilians.

The comments drew sharp criticism from Democratic lawmakers and international observers, some of whom raised legal and constitutional concerns about the language. References were made to international law governing civilian protections during conflict.

Despite the backlash, Trump maintained that the approach advanced U.S. objectives in negotiations tied to Iran’s nuclear program.

Diplomatic efforts remain uncertain following the breakdown of talks.
