Former President Donald Trump commented on the recent abortion laws in Arizona and Florida, stating that both states had gone too far with their restrictions. Speaking after landing in Georgia for a fundraiser, Trump predicted that the laws would change and reiterated his belief that abortion policy should be determined by individual states.

The Arizona law, upheld by the state Supreme Court, makes performing an abortion a felony, with a narrow exception to save a pregnant person’s life. It will go into effect in 14 days unless repealed by the Legislature. Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs has called for the repeal of the law, and the state’s Democratic attorney general has stated she will not enforce any abortion bans.

In Florida, the state’s top court allowed a ban on abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy to go into effect, triggering a six-week ban. Trump suggested that this law might also change. The Florida court ruling allowed for a November ballot measure that would protect abortion rights in the state. Advocates in Arizona are working to get a similar measure on their state’s ballot.

Trump declined to say whether he would support federal legislation restricting abortion, maintaining that it should be left up to the states. His comments were seized upon by Democrats, who argued that they demonstrated the consequences of leaving abortion access to the states. The Biden campaign has repeatedly highlighted Trump’s claim of credit for ending Roe v. Wade.
