Republican Party, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) is scheduled to meet with Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) as tensions rise over the GOP leadership. This meeting comes in the wake of Greene’s threat to force a vote on ousting Johnson from his position as the GOP leader.

The motion to vacate against Johnson was filed by Greene late last month, marking a significant escalation in the internal conflict within the party. Since then, the two have only exchanged text messages over the two-week Easter recess. A previous plan for them to speak last Friday fell through, making this meeting their first direct conversation since the motion was filed.

Greene has been vocal in her criticism of Johnson, particularly over his handling of government funding, aid to Ukraine, and the reauthorization of the U.S.‘s warrantless surveillance powers. She sent a five-page letter to House Republicans on Tuesday, outlining her grievances against Johnson and accusing him of a “complete and total surrender” to the Democrats’ agenda.

The timing of Greene’s motion to vacate is also noteworthy. It was filed as the House was voting on a $1.2 trillion spending package, a move that was strongly opposed by hard-line conservatives. They argued that the legislation did not include enough spending cuts or conservative policy riders.

Johnson, however, defended his handling of the appropriations process. He argued that shutting down the government would have been harmful — both practically and politically — and noted the House GOP’s razor-thin majority. He warned that an ouster vote would cause “chaos in the House” and hinder Republicans’ efforts to increase their majority in November.

The outcome of this meeting could have significant implications for the future of the Republican Party and its leadership. It remains to be seen how this internal conflict will be resolved and what impact it will have on the party’s prospects in the upcoming elections.
