COLUMBIA, SC — Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) will seek reelection in 2028, reversing a previous pledge to retire and extending his role in Republican Senate leadership. The decision keeps Scott, a key GOP figure and former presidential candidate, active in shaping the party’s strategy for upcoming election cycles.
Scott had previously stated in 2019 that he intended to leave Congress after about a decade, a timeline that would have aligned with the end of his current term. However, his campaign confirmed this week that he will instead pursue a third full term in the Senate.
Appointed in 2013 by then-Gov. Nikki Haley to replace former Sen. Jim DeMint, Scott later won a special election in 2014 and secured full terms in 2016 and 2022. His continued presence provides Republicans with an experienced incumbent in South Carolina, a reliably conservative state.
In explaining his decision, Scott pointed to his ongoing engagement with constituents, saying that traveling across the state influenced his choice to remain in office. His reelection bid is expected to reinforce GOP efforts to maintain or expand Senate control in future cycles.
