Donald Trump described far-right activist Laura Loomer as a “free spirit” with strong opinions after Republicans criticized her for promoting conspiracy theories and a racist social media post about Vice President Kamala Harris’ race. Loomer, who traveled with Trump to 9/11 memorial events, has a history of inflammatory comments, including calling 9/11 an “inside job.”
Senator Thom Tillis called Loomer a “crazy conspiracy theorist” damaging Trump’s re-election chances. Senator Lindsey Graham also expressed concern about her divisive statements. Trump, when asked about her remarks, claimed ignorance and emphasized her independence, saying, “I don’t control Laura.”
Loomer has described herself as “pro-white nationalism” and an “Islamophobe.” Recently, she spread false claims about Haitian migrants killing pets in Ohio, which Trump repeated during a debate. After making a racist comment about Harris’ heritage, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene condemned her post as “appalling and extremely racist.”
In a later Truth Social post, Trump said he disagreed with Loomer’s statements, but acknowledged her as a longtime supporter. Loomer refused to apologize or retract her statements.
