SACRAMENTO, California — President Donald Trump has alleged that Democrats are cheating in California’s primary elections, but he has provided no evidence to support the claim, and federal authorities have not confirmed that any investigation is underway.

In a series of overnight social media posts, Trump claimed Democrats were attempting to “steal” the California governor’s race and the Los Angeles mayoral contest through the counting of mail-in ballots. He further asserted that the matter was being investigated by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Los Angeles. However, the office declined to comment, and the Department of Justice did not immediately respond to inquiries regarding Trump’s assertion.

California election officials continue to process ballots under state law, which allows mail-in ballots postmarked by Election Day to be counted for up to a week afterward. Mail voting accounts for roughly 80% of ballots cast in many California elections, making prolonged vote counting common in the state.

The governor’s race remains too close to call, with Republican Steve Hilton, who has been endorsed by Trump, competing against Democratic candidates including Xavier Becerra and Tom Steyer. Election analysts note that late-counted mail ballots have historically favored Democrats, which could affect the final standings.

Election officials and bipartisan election integrity groups have warned that unsupported allegations of fraud can undermine public confidence. California Gov. Gavin Newsom recently urged election officials to count ballots both accurately and efficiently to reduce opportunities for misinformation to spread.
