The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will close or reduce operations at more than 30 recreation sites across six states starting mid-May, citing staffing shortages and budget cuts tied to President Trump’s government downsizing efforts.
The closures, which affect campgrounds, boat ramps, visitor centers, and recreation areas, are part of broader federal cuts under the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency. Trump imposed a federal hiring freeze in January after taking office for his second term.
Officials said concentrating staff at fewer locations would allow remaining sites to maintain full services and ensure the protection of critical infrastructure like hydropower operations.
Local leaders in affected areas, including South Dakota and Kansas, criticized the closures, warning about the potential economic impact on tourism-dependent communities.
District offices from Nebraska to Pennsylvania and Washington state have announced targeted cuts in recent weeks.
