WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressional Democrats intensified calls Tuesday to remove President Donald Trump from office following his warning that “a whole civilization will die” if Iran fails to meet a U.S. deadline.
Lawmakers cited the president’s remarks about potential strikes on Iranian infrastructure, including bridges and power plants, as justification for invoking the 25th Amendment or pursuing impeachment. Several Democrats argued the rhetoric could signal violations of international law and escalate an already volatile conflict.
Sen. Ed Markey urged the House to begin impeachment proceedings, while Rep. Diana DeGette called for immediate steps under the 25th Amendment, which allows the vice president and Cabinet to declare a president unfit for duty. Others, including Reps. Rashida Tlaib and Ayanna Pressley, also called for Trump’s removal, citing concerns over civilian harm and military escalation.
The White House dismissed the criticism, describing the remarks from Democrats as politically motivated. Officials also pointed to longstanding partisan tensions, noting previous efforts to remove Trump from office.
The 25th Amendment has never been used to remove a sitting president, while impeachment requires a majority vote in the House and a two-thirds vote in the Senate for conviction.
Democrats are also expected to pursue legislation aimed at limiting presidential war powers as tensions with Iran continue.
