House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) expressed interest in cutting federal funding for PBS and Planned Parenthood, though he acknowledged legislative hurdles. In a Fox News interview, Johnson said, “I would like to,” but emphasized the need to build consensus within Congress to secure votes.
Johnson described a “generational opportunity” to reform government, promoting limited government and individual freedoms. He highlighted plans to reduce the regulatory state and collaborate with Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, who will lead the new “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE). Congressional Republicans have created a related caucus to support these efforts.
PBS and Planned Parenthood have historically defended their federal funding, citing bipartisan support for their contributions to education, public health, and community services.
