Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina endorsed former President Donald Trump on Friday, intensifying Republican Party unity around Trump after his win in the Iowa caucus. This endorsement comes ahead of the New Hampshire primary and is seen as a significant setback for Nikki Haley, former U.N. ambassador and fellow South Carolinian, who is also vying for the Republican presidential nomination.
At a campaign event in Concord, New Hampshire, Scott delivered a spirited endorsement, emphasizing the need for a president who unites the country, secures the southern border, protects social security, and transcends racial divides. He did not mention Haley in his speech, despite her role in his senatorial appointment.
Trump’s campaign event also featured Rep. Elise Stefanik and other potential vice presidential candidates. Trump explicitly distanced himself from choosing Haley as a running mate, following pressure from his supporters.
Scott, who briefly ran against Trump, had previously been critical of the former president. His endorsement, a valuable asset in the South Carolina primaries, indicates a growing consolidation of GOP support around Trump.
In the backdrop of this endorsement, Trump has been campaigning with other former rivals and focusing on a decisive victory in New Hampshire to pivot towards the November contest against President Joe Biden. Meanwhile, Haley and other candidates like Florida Governor Ron DeSantis continue their campaigns, with DeSantis shifting focus to South Carolina.
