WASHINGTON, DC — A new Reuters/Ipsos poll highlights deep partisan divides over election integrity, with many Republicans aligning with unproven claims promoted by President Donald Trump ahead of the midterm elections.

The survey found 63% of Republicans believe Trump’s assertion that the 2020 election was stolen, while 82% agreed that non-citizens cast fraudulent ballots.

Overall, the findings point to growing distrust in the electoral system among Republican voters, while Democrats and independents remain far less likely to share those views. Analysts say the divide reflects years of messaging around election security and fraud.

At the same time, the poll shows broad bipartisan support for certain election measures. About 77% of respondents favor voter identification requirements, including 95% of Republicans. Support for increased federal law enforcement presence at polling places is also higher among Republicans than Democrats.

The issue is central to ongoing legislative debates, including the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, which would require proof of citizenship to register to vote. The House has passed the measure, though it faces opposition in the Senate.

Researchers warn that persistent claims about election fraud, many of which lack supporting evidence, could undermine confidence in democratic processes as the midterms approach.
