ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA — Republican gubernatorial candidate Mike Lindell is proposing a six-month pause in deportations to allow undocumented Minnesota residents without criminal records to apply for what he calls conditional work visas.
Lindell said applicants would be fingerprinted and screened before receiving permanent authorization to work and pay taxes. They would not receive citizenship or voting rights under his proposal.
The MyPillow founder said people whose only offense was entering the United States illegally should receive another opportunity to remain and work. He also proposed jail sentences for business executives who knowingly continue paying undocumented workers in cash after the registration period.
Lindell acknowledged that President Donald Trump, who endorsed his campaign last week, may oppose the plan. Trump’s administration has prioritized expanded deportations and increased cooperation between state authorities and ICE.
A Minnesota governor could restrict state participation in federal enforcement, but cannot independently issue immigration visas or provide federal work authorization. Implementing Lindell’s plan would therefore require cooperation from Congress or the Trump administration.
Lindell said he would cooperate with federal agents while enforcing laws governing protests. He is seeking the Republican nomination to face Democratic gubernatorial candidate Amy Klobuchar.
