WASHINGTON, D.C. — Republican Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky is threatening to reintroduce articles of impeachment against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth unless he resigns, adding to growing Republican criticism of the Pentagon chief following the party’s devastating midterm losses.

“There is one contingency in which I won’t reintroduce the articles of impeachment: Hegseth resigns,” Massie wrote Wednesday on X. He told CNN he intends to force a House vote when lawmakers return next week, with multiple Republican sources reportedly predicting the measure could pass.

Massie previously introduced eight articles of impeachment in September, accusing Hegseth of violating congressional war powers, authorizing unauthorized military operations, failing to protect civilians and retaliating against Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly. The effort never reached a floor vote after Speaker Mike Johnson adjourned the House early ahead of the midterms.

The renewed pressure comes as Republicans increasingly blame the unpopular war with Iran for their election losses. Vice President JD Vance directly identified the conflict as the primary reason Republicans lost control of Congress, writing, “The reason we lost is the war.”

Several Republicans have also accused Hegseth of persuading President Donald Trump to launch the conflict and continuing to advocate military escalation despite limited results.

Trump publicly defended Hegseth Wednesday, saying he was doing a “very good job.” Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell likewise insisted Hegseth remains committed to serving through the end of Trump’s term.

Massie, who lost his Republican primary earlier this year to a Trump-backed challenger, is nevertheless moving forward with his impeachment effort.
