Washington, DC — Republican Rep. Thomas Massie is urging President Donald Trump to fire Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth before the House considers articles of impeachment accusing him of abusing his office and waging war without congressional authorization.
“Trump should fire Hegseth to avoid Hegseth’s impeachment. It’s the honorable thing to do,” Massie wrote Thursday.
Massie introduced eight articles of impeachment in September alleging that Hegseth violated congressional war powers in the Iran conflict, authorized or enabled extrajudicial killings, failed to adequately protect civilians and suppressed speech. Hegseth and the administration deny wrongdoing.
House Republican leaders delayed consideration of the impeachment measure until after the Nov. 3 midterms. Massie has accused leadership of trying to spare vulnerable Republicans from taking a politically damaging vote and says he will reintroduce the articles during the lame-duck session regardless of the election results.
Pressure on Hegseth has grown even inside his own party. Republican Sen. Thom Tillis has also said Hegseth should be replaced, citing what he called serious management failures at the Pentagon.
The latest criticism comes after Trump publicly overruled Hegseth’s plan to livestream the firing-squad execution of Nidal Hasan following bipartisan backlash.
