WASHINGTON, D.C. — Republican Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina said Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth “needs to go,” backing either impeachment or removal by President Donald Trump as criticism of the Pentagon chief expands within the GOP.
Tillis made the comments Thursday after Republican Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky introduced eight articles of impeachment accusing Hegseth of constitutional and legal violations involving U.S. military operations in Iran, Venezuela and Yemen. Massie also accused Hegseth of defying congressional war-powers restrictions and retaliating against critics.
“I’ll let the House do what the House is gonna do,” Tillis told reporters. “We’ve got a management problem here. He needs to go.” Tillis added that having Trump replace Hegseth would be the “most expedient route.”
The North Carolina senator voted to confirm Hegseth but has become an increasingly vocal critic. Earlier this month, Tillis said he had “never witnessed more inept management” at the Pentagon and urged Trump to install new leadership.
House Speaker Mike Johnson sent lawmakers into an early recess Wednesday rather than hold the anticipated impeachment vote. Massie said Republican leaders were concerned that additional GOP members could support his effort.
The House would have to approve impeachment before any Senate trial could occur.
