WASHINGTON, D.C. — Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) says he plans to renew his impeachment effort against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth when Congress returns after the November midterm elections, if Hegseth is still in office.
Massie said Monday that the impeachment resolution will be a “week one” issue when lawmakers return for the lame-duck session beginning the week of Nov. 9. The Kentucky Republican plans to invoke a privileged resolution, a procedure that could force House leaders to address the matter within two legislative days.
The resolution contains eight articles accusing Hegseth of “high crimes and misdemeanors.” Among the allegations are violations of the 1973 War Powers Resolution involving military operations against Iran, as well as alleged unlawful actions connected to Venezuela, Yemen, the Caribbean and eastern Pacific. Massie has also accused Hegseth of failing to sufficiently protect civilians during wartime and retaliating against Sen. Mark Kelly over protected speech.
Massie originally introduced the articles in September. Speaker Mike Johnson later canceled scheduled House votes before lawmakers left Washington, pushing consideration until after the election. Johnson denied the schedule change was intended to avoid the impeachment vote and called Massie’s effort a “publicity stunt.”
Massie, who lost his Republican primary this year to a Trump-backed challenger, will leave Congress when his term ends. He said he believes the lame-duck session could provide enough Democratic support and Republican defections for the resolution to advance.
