WASHINGTON, D.C. — A new report indicates President Donald Trump has privately expressed interest in deploying U.S. ground troops in Iran, drawing criticism from lawmakers who oppose expanding the conflict.

Unnamed sources told NBC News that Trump has discussed the possibility of sending American soldiers into Iran as the war enters its second week.

Democratic lawmakers quickly condemned the idea. Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) called the potential move “madness,” while Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) warned that Americans do not want another prolonged war in the Middle East.

The White House pushed back on the reporting, but Trump has previously said he would not rule out ground troops if he believes they are necessary.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian rejected Trump’s call for “unconditional surrender” while apologizing to neighboring countries for recent missile strikes carried out during the escalating conflict.

Iranian officials have warned that if the United States deploys troops inside the country, American military bases and interests across the region could become targets.
