Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., has been subpoenaed for a deposition in a defamation lawsuit by Chris Dorworth, a former Florida state lawmaker and Gaetz’s ally, who claims he was defamed amid an investigation into allegations Gaetz had a sexual relationship with a minor. The lawsuit involves several defendants, including an unnamed young woman and Joel Greenberg, a former tax collector now serving a prison sentence for federal crimes including sex trafficking of a minor. The investigation into Gaetz, which started in 2020, concluded last year without charges against him.
Dorworth’s lawsuit responds to allegations linking him to the scandal, which he denies. Gaetz, not a direct party to the lawsuit, has yet to indicate compliance with the subpoena. The lawsuit aims to address claims against Dorworth of serious criminal activities, which he disputes as false. The case also draws attention to Greenberg’s attempts to implicate others, potentially to reduce his sentence. The House Ethics Committee is investigating related allegations against Gaetz, who denies any wrongdoing.
