Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) has proposed a bill to bar transgender women from using Capitol Hill facilities matching their gender identity. This move follows the election of Rep.-elect Sarah McBride (D-Del.), the first openly transgender member of Congress.

The bill tasks House sergeant-at-arms William McFarland with enforcing the ban, though details on how this would be implemented remain unclear. Similar state-level bans have faced criticism for relying on unreliable complaint systems. LGBTQ rights advocates, including McBride, condemned the measure as a divisive distraction, with McBride focusing on addressing issues like housing and healthcare costs.

Mace aims to include the measure in the 119th Congress rules package or bring it to a standalone vote. If neither option succeeds, she plans to force a vote. The House will decide on the rules package in January, with Republicans holding a slim majority.
