Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.), a strong supporter of Donald Trump, did not commit to certifying the results of the 2024 election in a Sunday interview. Donalds was asked on CNN’s State of the Union whether Congress should follow the 2022 updates to the Electoral Count Act, which make it harder to challenge presidential election outcomes. He responded that, as long as states follow their own election laws, he would have no issues, but his vague answer raised concerns.

CNN’s Dana Bash pressed Donalds, pointing out that this left a “giant loophole,” and fact-checked him when he repeated baseless claims that some states didn’t follow the law during the 2020 election. There is no evidence of widespread voter fraud, and Trump’s legal challenges in 2020 were unsuccessful.

Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) expressed concern about House Speaker Mike Johnson’s commitment to certifying a Democratic victory if it occurs, given his history of supporting Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

Some GOP members, including Johnson, have raised concerns about noncitizen voting in federal elections, although there is no evidence of systematic fraud involving noncitizens.
