AUSTIN, Texas — California Gov. Gavin Newsom will travel to Texas on Saturday to rally against Republican-led redistricting efforts, joining local Democratic lawmakers as political tensions over congressional maps deepen ahead of the 2026 midterms. The move comes just days after California voters approved Proposition 50, a measure allowing Democrats to redraw their own districts midcycle.

Texas was the first state to follow President Donald Trump’s directive encouraging red states to rework their congressional maps before the next election. Newsom said California’s vote “sets an example for other states” and vowed to help Democrats “push back against Trump’s election rigging.”

California’s new law could add up to five Democratic House seats in 2026, mirroring Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s Republican-backed map that is expected to net the GOP a similar number. Abbott called his plan “The One Big Beautiful Map,” saying it reflects “Texans’ actual voting preferences.”

Political analysts say Newsom’s activism could elevate his national profile as he continues his public rivalry with Trump and considers a possible 2028 presidential bid. The rally is scheduled for noon Saturday, with a location yet to be announced.
