The North Carolina House is advancing legislation that would allow pharmacists to sell ivermectin without a prescription, marking a significant shift from the state’s pandemic-era stance. Ivermectin is FDA-approved to treat parasitic infections but was widely promoted as a COVID-19 remedy despite later studies disproving its effectiveness against the virus.

Rep. Jonathan Almond (R-Cabarrus), sponsor of House Bill 618, said the bill is about “access” and mirrors efforts in at least 14 other states. Idaho, Arkansas, and Tennessee already allow similar over-the-counter sales.

Democratic lawmakers raised safety concerns. Rep. Marcia Morey (D-Durham) cited studies showing the risks of unsupervised use, including drug interactions and overdose. The FDA and poison control centers previously warned against misuse after a surge in overdoses during the pandemic, when some individuals consumed veterinary formulations.

Proponents argued pharmacy access is safer than black-market or animal supply purchases. Three citizens told lawmakers ivermectin improved their health, with one saying she plans to take it indefinitely under guidance from a holistic doctor.

The bill cleared two House committees Tuesday and is headed to the House floor for a vote.
