Washington, D.C. Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) criticized House Republicans for issuing subpoenas to former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as part of the Jeffrey Epstein investigation, calling the move “theater” and arguing that Congress should instead focus on releasing all related files.
Speaking on the Breaking Points program, Massie said compelling testimony from the Clintons would do little to uncover the truth or serve victims. While he said the former officials should either comply with the subpoenas or face contempt proceedings, he argued that testimony would likely amount to political spectacle rather than accountability. “This is the wrong way to get at the truth for these victims,” Massie said, adding that lawmakers should “just release the doggone files.”
The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee issued subpoenas last week seeking testimony from both Clintons regarding their interactions with Epstein, a convicted sex offender who died in federal custody in 2019. Bill Clinton has appeared in flight logs and photographs released in recent years but has not been accused of wrongdoing. His spokesperson has said the former president supports transparency.
Massie co-sponsored the Epstein Files Transparency Act with Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.), which President Donald Trump signed into law in November. The legislation required the Department of Justice to release Epstein-related records by Dec. 19. While the DOJ has released more than 12,000 documents, officials say millions more are under review, citing victim protection and redactions. Massie warned that excessive redactions risk shielding powerful individuals and undermining public trust.
