A Gallup survey reveals 62% of Americans believe the federal government should ensure health care coverage for all, the highest level in over a decade. Support was lowest in 2013 (42%) during the Affordable Care Act (ACA) rollout but peaked in 2006 at 69%.
Gallup reported that most Americans supported government-led health care from 2000 to 2008, but opinions divided during ACA’s introduction. Support rebounded later in President Obama’s tenure and continues to grow among Republicans and independents. Currently, 32% of Republicans and 65% of independents favor government involvement, marking increases since 2020.
The survey also indicates challenges for President-elect Trump, who previously attempted to repeal the ACA in 2017. Public support for the ACA is now as strong as during his first term.
Conducted from Nov. 6-20, the survey involved 1,001 adults and has a 4-point margin of error.
