Two new polls released Wednesday reveal declining public confidence in President Trump‘s handling of the economy, particularly regarding his trade policies and sweeping tariffs.
A Pew Research Center survey conducted April 7–13 found that 55% of U.S. adults lack confidence in Trump’s economic decision-making—his lowest rating on that question since 2019 and a 14-point drop since his November re-election. Only 39% support his approach to tariffs.
A separate Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted April 16–21 shows just 37% of Americans approve of Trump’s economic performance, a record low in their polling of Trump. Approval of his international trade policies stood at only 36%.
The findings reflect a shift in public perception, as Trump had historically maintained stronger ratings on the economy despite controversies. Rising concerns over tariffs and fears of a potential downturn may be contributing to the pessimism. New Gallup data also shows most Americans now believe their personal economic situation is worsening.
