Conservative figures have accused Elon Musk’s social media platform X of censorship after losing their verification badges following criticisms of Musk’s support for H-1B visas and controversial comments about Indian culture. These critics, including Laura Loomer, Gavin Wax, and Owen Shroyer, claim their accounts were targeted due to their dissenting views, though such allegations are difficult to confirm. Musk’s platform has often been seen by conservatives as a haven for free speech, but some now accuse it of silencing dissent.
Musk defended his platform’s algorithms, stating that accounts blocked or muted by a significant number of credible users may see reduced reach, and that coordinated spam attacks will be categorized as such. Loomer’s initial critique of H-1B policies and subsequent posts, some involving racist remarks, have drawn support from Trump allies like Steve Bannon.
Musk has a history of actions against journalists and organizations he disagrees with, including removing NPR’s verification and suspending independent journalist Ken Klippenstein for policy violations. X has yet to comment officially on these new claims.
