The Kentucky Republican-majority legislature plans to discuss a bill that would make parents liable for gun crimes committed by their children. Proposed by Republican Rep. Kim Banta, the bill is inspired by existing laws holding parents accountable for damages caused by their children while driving.

Under the legislation, parents or guardians could face civil damages for injuries resulting from their children’s gun use if they are found negligent or guilty of willful misconduct. Banta emphasized that the bill’s goal is to reduce gun violence among minors without infringing on gun rights.

“I’m not trying to stop gun sales or enact gun control,” she told Fox News, highlighting that the focus is on raising parental awareness and responsibility.

Kentucky already classifies providing reckless access to guns as a felony. This proposed law aligns with measures in California, which allow victims of gun violence to sue parents or guardians for damages. It follows Michigan’s landmark case where the parents of school shooter Ethan Crumbley were sentenced to prison for their son’s crimes.
