Washington, D.C. — House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries told Democrats he will vote against a proposal to cut $3.3 billion in U.S. military aid to Israel from a 2027 State Department funding bill.
The amendment, introduced by Rep. Thomas Massie, would remove Foreign Military Financing for Israel. Jeffries said in a letter to colleagues that the proposal is “overly broad” and could limit the U.S. response to Hamas, Hezbollah, and other groups hostile to both the United States and Israel.
Axios reported that Democratic leaders are not whipping the vote, leaving members free to decide individually. The proposal has exposed divisions among Democrats, with some progressives supporting the cut as pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government and others opposing it as too sweeping.
Jeffries said future U.S.-Israel agreements should follow human rights laws and reflect that Israel can pay for more of its own advanced weapons. The Guardian reported that Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar also opposes the amendment, while Progressive Caucus Chair Greg Casar supports it.
The amendment is unlikely to pass.
