St. Augustine, Florida — A man was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer Tuesday after fleeing an encounter with federal immigration officers in St. Augustine, Florida, authorities said.
Florida Highway Patrol said four people were inside a vehicle at a Wawa gas station when they ran from Homeland Security Investigations and ICE officers during an encounter in the parking lot. One person ran across Florida State Road 16 and into the path of a tractor-trailer.
The driver stopped and tried to help, but the man later died. The Department of Homeland Security told NewsNation that the incident involved the death of a Mexican national and remains under investigation. Officials had not released the man’s name or clarified what happened to the three others in the vehicle.
The incident is the third death connected to an ICE operation since July 7. Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was fatally shot by ICE officers during a traffic stop in Houston, and Joan Sebastian Guerrero was killed Monday during an ICE operation in Biddeford, Maine.
The Hill reported that ICE has privately directed officers to temporarily pause traffic stops, though the agency declined to confirm any change in tactics.
