Beltsville, Maryland — Police in Prince George’s County arrested a man accused of stealing a kitten from a pet store and then bringing the cat with him during an attempted bank robbery.
The suspect allegedly took Magnolia, a 3-and-a-half-month-old tuxedo kitten, from an adoption area inside a Pet Supplies Plus store on Monday morning. Police said he then went to a nearby PNC Bank branch in Beltsville.
According to Beltsville Community Cats, the man asked the bank manager to hold the kitten while he wrote a note, then handed the note to a teller demanding cash. The robbery was unsuccessful, and police arrested the suspect. No injuries were reported.
Magnolia was later found safe in the bank manager’s office. The rescue group said the kitten and manager had “bonded over their shared ordeal.”
Pet store employees told NBC Washington that the suspect had visited the store repeatedly over the previous two weeks and appeared focused on Magnolia. Store employees said he used a key to open the adoption area before taking her.
Magnolia remains available for adoption through Beltsville Community Cats.
