Washington, D.C. — Americans’ confidence in major U.S. institutions remains near a record low, according to a new Gallup survey.
The poll, conducted June 1-15, found that 27% of respondents expressed a “great deal” or “average” amount of confidence in 14 major public and private institutions. That is down one point from last year and just above the record low Gallup measured in 2023.
The military received the highest confidence rating, with 61% of respondents expressing trust in the armed forces. Police, organized religion, banks, and the medical system followed, though none of those four received majority confidence.
Congress remained the lowest-rated institution, with 9% of respondents expressing confidence. The presidency stood at 27%, slightly above its 2022 low.
Gallup surveyed public-sector institutions including Congress, the presidency, the Supreme Court, the military, public schools, police, and the criminal justice system. Private-sector institutions included banks, big business, organized labor, newspapers, television news, the medical system, and organized religion.
The Hill noted that the findings come as President Donald Trump’s approval rating remains below 50% ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
