Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israeli forces have moved into Syria’s border buffer zone following the collapse of Bashar Assad’s regime. Netanyahu attributed Assad’s downfall to Israel’s military campaigns against Iran and Hezbollah. He stated, “We will not allow any hostile force to establish itself on our border,” emphasizing the need to protect Golan Heights communities.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed deployments in the buffer zone to defend Israel while stressing their non-involvement in Syria’s internal affairs. This marks the first stationing of Israeli troops in the buffer zone since its establishment in 1974 after the 1973 Middle East war. Previously, Israel has remained neutral in Syria’s civil war, offering medical aid to war victims.

Israel captured and later annexed the Golan Heights in 1967 and 1981, respectively, though the annexation remains widely unrecognized except by the United States since 2019.
