Capitol Police’s top lawyer, Thomas DiBiase, has filed a sworn affidavit alleging that House Republicans ignored the force’s requests to review all January 6th security footage that they planned to make public. DiBiase stated that only one clip out of more than 40 was previewed and approved beforehand. Furthermore, none of the remaining clips was shown to the Capitol Police before being made public.
Capitol Police reportedly granted access to the footage requested by the Republicans in just a few days, installing three terminals in a House office building. The request came from Tim Monahan, who is both a top aide to Speaker Kevin McCarthy and a staff director for the House Administration Committee.
The affidavit raises concerns that the Capitol Police is at odds with House leaders, which could threaten its budget and endanger the members it is tasked with protecting. The filing is part of a Jan. 6 criminal case, and it has forced the Capitol Police to describe private interactions with members and staffers in open court.
