The House Ethics Committee announced it is investigating whether Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) obstructed investigations into his conduct, while dropping some other lines of inquiry. The committee issued 25 subpoenas and noted that the investigation has garnered “a significant and unusual amount of public reporting,” much of which has been inaccurate.
Despite difficulties in obtaining information from Gaetz and others, the committee has interviewed over a dozen witnesses and reviewed thousands of documents. It continues to investigate allegations of sexual misconduct, drug use, and improper gift acceptance, among others, which began in April 2021. The committee is also examining new allegations that Gaetz dispensed special favors to individuals with personal connections and obstructed investigations.
However, the committee will not pursue further action on allegations that Gaetz shared inappropriate images on the House floor, misused state ID records, converted campaign funds for personal use, or accepted bribes.
Gaetz has denied all allegations, calling the new investigations “frivolous” and based on “lies.” He criticized former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), asserting his removal was due to concerns about McCarthy’s “truthfulness,” not the Ethics probe.
The committee emphasized that an investigation does not imply a violation has occurred and stated no further public comments will be made except per committee rules.
