Washington, D.C. – President Donald Trump and the United States received broadly negative reviews in a new Pew Research Center survey of 36 countries, with many respondents expressing low confidence in Trump’s handling of world affairs.
Pew found that a median of 23% of adults surveyed said they trust Trump to do the right thing on international issues. A median of 50% said the United States is not a reliable partner, while 34% said it is reliable.
Views of the U.S. varied widely. Pew reported that Israel had one of the highest favorable views of the United States, while confidence in Trump was especially low in several countries, including Turkey, Sweden, Mexico, Pakistan, and Malaysia.
The survey also found concern about U.S. foreign policy, trade barriers, and the health of American democracy. Pew’s Richard Wike said international opposition to Trump’s approach reflects concern over putting barriers between the U.S. and the rest of the world.
The survey was conducted Feb. 8 to May 13 among 42,151 adults across 36 countries.
