New York, New York – New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s endorsed candidates swept key Democratic congressional primaries Tuesday, ousting two incumbents and strengthening the democratic socialist leader’s influence beyond City Hall.

Associated Press projected that Darializa Avila Chevalier defeated Rep. Adriano Espaillat in New York’s 13th District, while former city Comptroller Brad Lander beat Rep. Dan Goldman in the 10th District. State Assembly Member Claire Valdez also won the Democratic primary for the seat being vacated by retiring Rep. Nydia Velázquez.

The victories give Mamdani three likely allies in Congress from heavily Democratic districts and mark a setback for establishment Democrats, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who backed incumbents and party-preferred candidates.

The races highlighted divisions over housing, immigration enforcement, wealth taxes, and U.S. policy toward Israel and Gaza. Mamdani’s slate emphasized taxing the wealthy, abolishing ICE, and taking a more forceful stance against Israel’s war in Gaza.

Elsewhere in New York, state Assembly member Micah Lasher won the Democratic primary for retiring Rep. Jerry Nadler’s seat, defeating a field that included Jack Schlossberg, grandson of former President John F. Kennedy.
