Washington, D.C. — Global approval of China’s leadership has surpassed that of the United States, according to a new Gallup poll, marking the widest gap between the two nations in nearly two decades.
The survey found China’s median global approval rating rose to 36% in 2025, while U.S. leadership fell to 31%, an eight-point drop from the previous year. Disapproval of U.S. leadership climbed to a record 48%, compared to 37% for China.
Both countries recorded negative net approval ratings, with the U.S. reaching a low of -15 and China at -1. Analysts noted that some countries’ alignment with China reflects dissatisfaction with the U.S. rather than strong support for Beijing.
Countries such as Russia, Pakistan, and Singapore showed stronger alignment with China, while nations including Israel and Poland favored the U.S. A large share of countries expressed only weak alignment with either power.
Gallup also found fewer respondents worldwide reporting no opinion, suggesting more defined global views of both nations.
The findings come as geopolitical tensions remain high, including ongoing conflict involving Iran and shifting diplomatic priorities for the U.S. and China.
