Paris, France – French prosecutors raided X’s Paris offices on Tuesday and summoned Elon Musk and former X CEO Linda Yaccarino for voluntary questioning as part of a criminal investigation tied to Grok, the AI chatbot developed by Musk’s company xAI. The probe centers on allegations of algorithm abuse, Holocaust denial content, and the creation of sexually explicit deepfake images.
According to the Paris prosecutor’s office, the investigation began in January 2025 and expanded after reports that Grok generated antisemitic language and nonconsensual sexual images, including material appearing to depict minors. The search was conducted with support from Europol, underscoring the cross-border nature of the case. Musk and Yaccarino, who stepped down as X’s CEO in July, were asked to appear in Paris on April 20. X did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The French action is part of a broader international crackdown on Grok and Musk’s companies. Regulators in the United Kingdom have opened parallel investigations, while California Attorney General Rob Bonta has issued a cease-and-desist letter demanding xAI halt what he described as illegal activity involving deepfake sexual images. Malaysia and Indonesia have blocked Grok entirely.
Grok recently restricted some image-generation features following public backlash. Still, researchers at the Center for Countering Digital Hate estimate the tool produced millions of sexualized images in a short period, raising unresolved questions about liability when AI systems cause harm.
