MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota — Two Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have been placed on leave after federal officials said video evidence suggests they made untruthful statements under oath about a January shooting in north Minneapolis.

ICE Acting Director Todd Lyons said Friday that both agents are under internal investigation and that the U.S. Attorney’s Office is reviewing potential false statements tied to a Jan. 14 car chase that ended when one agent shot a man in the leg. Lyons warned that lying under oath is a serious federal offense and could lead to termination or criminal prosecution.

The development follows the Department of Justice’s decision to drop assault charges against Alfredo Aljorna, 26, and Julio Sosa-Celis, 24, citing newly discovered evidence. The initial complaint alleged the men struck an agent with a broom and snow shovel before the shooting. The men deny those claims and say the agent fired through their duplex door.

Earlier federal statements described the encounter as a targeted stop and alleged an attempted murder of federal officers. Subsequent filings acknowledged mistaken identity in identifying the driver.

Officials have not publicly detailed what portions of the agents’ statements were inaccurate.
