The federal government will reinstate the legal status of international students whose records were recently and abruptly terminated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a government lawyer announced Friday in federal court.

Judges around the country had already issued temporary orders restoring individual student records in SEVIS, the federal database tracking international students. ICE will now manually reactivate affected records and suspend terminations that stemmed from FBI criminal records checks, according to a statement provided to attorneys representing students.

The move comes after a wave of lawsuits filed by students and schools, many of whom were never notified their records were terminated. ICE confirmed it is developing a formal policy regarding SEVIS terminations but will not modify records based solely on NCIC findings until that policy is finalized.

Attorney Brian Green, representing one of the plaintiffs, said the government’s reversal applies to all similarly situated students, not just those involved in legal action.
